Writing the Memoir: A Workshop begins March 16
Whether you are aspiring to write a memoir or are already at work on one, this workshop will offer insights into the requirements of memoir, as opposed to autobiography, personal journals, and diaries. In the first half of the 12 classes, we will study the form; read and discuss published work; learn how to come to terms with personal history; understand the discipline necessary to finish, and the steps to publication. In the final classes we will read from our own work and offer support and critique. Your instructor is Mary-Ann Tirone Smith, bestselling author of Girls of Tender Age, and eight novels including the Poppy Rice mysteries. Classes meet at the library on twelve consecutive Tuesdays at 7pm beginning March 16. Cost of the workshop is $300 with a portion benefitting the Hagaman Memorial Library. Cash or checks to Mary-Ann Tirone Smith are accepted; or pay by credit card:
The Kindle is Here!
The library has purchased a Kindle for our patrons to try out. The Kindle is an electronic device that can hold over 1500 books. The device weighs only 10 ounces and incorporates a diagonal E Ink® electronic paper display that can be read comfortably on the sunniest beach day. Even better, the font can be adjusted to even larger levels than our large print books, and you can choose an option that makes the device read aloud to you. If you like large print books, or you are learning English, give it a try. Special education teachers may also find the Kindle useful. And of course, anyone can try it just because it's new and different! Add your name to the hold list today.
Free Digital Audiobooks via iCONN
The State Library has announced a new statewide downloadable audio books service. The audio books collection is a service of iCONN, the State Library's re-search engine, and is made possible by a PEGPETIA grant from the Department of Public Utilities. Titles can be downloaded to PC or Macs using the free plugin from Ingram Digital Group called the Ingram Media Manager. From your computer, you can then transfer titles to iPods and certain MP3 players for limited times. Follow the link to Digital Audiobooks, under Online Resources, from the sidebar to the left.
